A few years ago, a friend of mine casually told me during the summer that his child would be attending kindergarten at a certain school that fall. He and his wife thought this new school would be perfect for their child—a nice compromise with education a cut above what most schools were offering.
It was only a few weeks into the school year when this same friend reached out to me in an email, asking for information and my take on some alternative education options. In essence, he’d already realized that this school wasn’t right for his child. He wanted to find a better education before it was too late.
I recount this story because my guess is that you or a friend or family member may be in the same situation today. We’re only a few weeks into the new school year. Our kids are settling into their new classes, they’re getting adjusted to their new teachers, and those on the parent, guardian, or grandparent drop-off/pick-up line have slipped into their new routine.
But with familiarity also comes the realization that all may not be well.
- Maybe your child is coming home every day in tears, terrorized by another student’s words.
- Maybe your child is coming home every day saying that he doesn’t know how to do his homework because the teacher spent all her time dealing with children who were throwing books or even desks.
- Maybe your child is coming home every day complaining that he’s bored … simply because the teacher must dumb the lessons down to the lowest common denominator because half the kids in the class can’t read at grade level.
What do you do? Do you turn a blind eye to these issues, hoping it will all turn out in the end, or do you scrimp and save, trying to pull enough money together to pay for tuition at a small private school or microschool?
This dilemma is one that MANY parents face. The fact is, our public schools are failing. And if parents want to see their children succeed, they need to find a school that offers a better education option. But many families simply cannot afford those better education options.
That’s where Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) come in. ESAs are sweeping the nation, with many states offering around $7,000 annually to each student so that he or she can attend the school of their choice. ESAs offer hope to parents who want the best for their children but simply don’t have the financial means to give it to them.
With nearly 20 states, including Iowa, already implementing school choice and Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), we could have this wonderful education solution in Minnesota, too.
